Bellotto Click

The app 'Bellotto Click', developed for the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, offers an individual city tour through Dresden's old town without time constraints.

On the occasion of the 300th birthday of Bernardo Bellotto, the court painter of Augustus the Third, the app sheds new light on Bellotto's works, the originals of which can be seen in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister. Along the painted locations, the application takes the user on a city rally through today's Dresden. The interactive app offers a playful way to get to know Dresden (anew). Changes in the city's history are revealed by looking at Bellotto's works in detail and comparing them directly with the cityscape.

Immersive experience: Bringing artworks to life

The app offers more than just presenting Bellotto's works and related information. The game concept and design use the paintings as a basis: what Bellotto depicted is thematically linked to the urban space at the individual stations by means of picture puzzles, quizzes, scratch pictures or puzzles. The figures with which Bellotto's works are richly decorated accompany the users during their tour. The immersive experience of the works in the city invites playful discovery. If you see a four-drawn carriage rumbling over the cobblestones in one of the paintings, you might just hear the squeaking of the trams.

To intensify the feeling of being transported to the artist's time, the app users start with a compass and map. They are invited to look at the matching painting at the marked points. Thanks to the location recognition system, users can find the next point they are aiming for or see the route they have taken based on the places they have visited. It is possible to explore the full view of the paintings by zooming in. In this way, users can immerse themselves in the wealth of figures, animals and carriages and find numerous clues to the way of life in Bellotto's time.

Using the app should be entertaining and fun. After each task solved, fireworks reward the players and motivate them to continue. At a marked point near Bellotto's house in the Salzgasse, users take their own person back in time; all they have to do is take a selfie. The app recognises the outline of the person, cuts it free and inserts it into a historical photo of the Salzgasse. In other places, scratch pictures enhance the feeling of looking back to another time.

The application can be paused, hotspots can be skipped or repeated. Participants have the opportunity to discover Dresden at their own pace and enjoy the views and gastronomic offerings along the way. Finally, the tour ends at the Zwinger, where Bellotto's paintings can be admired in the original in the Gemäldegalerie.

Discovering Dresden in a different way

No prior knowledge is necessary for the city rally. You can choose between two tours of different lengths, which start at the Altmarkt and lead to the Gemäldegalerie in the Zwinger. If you wish, you can stroll to the Golden Horseman and enjoy the Canaletto view from the right-hand side of the Elbe. Individually or as a team, the Bellotto Click-App is an excellent way to get to know Dresden's Old Town, because it combines knowledge of art and history with exploring the city.
