Greentech innovations from Dresden - sustainable and fit for the future

Greentech, an abbreviation for Green Technology, stands for a combination of business, science, environment and technology, whereby supply chains or production processes are designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible. Due to ever scarcer resources and climate change, many things have to be changed, improved and converted. Today, Dresden is already approaching this goal with over 360 actors. These include start-ups, medium-sized companies and internationally active corporations, which have already produced numerous internationally acclaimed technologies that also pay off economically.

Solar energy plays a major role in renewable energies, with one of the pioneering companies in the German solar industry, Solarwatt, developing and producing all the essential components of a solar system here in Dresden. These include, for example, extremely durable solar modules, intelligent energy managers and highly efficient electricity storage systems. The company also supports its customers in efficiently supplying e-cars with solar energy.

However, photovoltaic systems are still very limited because, among other things, the load-bearing capacity of buildings is too low or the shape and materials are unsuitable. To solve such problems, the company Heliatek offers flexible solar films that are extremely thin and pliable, allowing solar modules to be glued to a wide variety of surfaces without a substructure. By 2030, they want to be able to equip buildings with organic thin-film solar solutions and supply them with 100 % green electricity.

The fact that the new technology comes from Dresden, of all places, is no coincidence. Heliatek is a university spin-off, one of many in the city, because Dresden offers a well-connected ecosystem of elite university, research and semiconductor industry. The city is also an international pioneer in the development of new materials.
In view of the diverse climatic challenges, greentech in Dresden is also expected to grow strongly in the coming years.
